How KSEB Net Metering Works for Rooftop Solar in Kerala

Net metering is the reason an on-grid solar system pays for itself, and it is also the part most homeowners in Trivandrum and Kollam find hardest to picture. Here is what actually happens on your roof, in your meter box and on your bill.

Your appliances use the solar first

When the panels are generating, that power goes to whatever is running in the house at that moment - the fridge, the pump, the air conditioner. Nothing is stored and nothing is exported until your own demand is met. This is why an on-grid system suits households that use most of their power during daylight hours.

The surplus goes back to the grid

Once your consumption is covered, the excess is fed back into the local utility grid automatically. You do not switch anything; the grid-tie inverter handles it. The energy leaving your premises is what earns you credit.

The net meter counts both directions

A net meter is installed by your electrical utility in place of the ordinary meter. It records two numbers: the electricity you import from the grid, and the excess solar electricity you export to it. At the end of the billing cycle you pay only for the difference - the net power consumed. That single sentence is the whole mechanism.

What this means at night and during outages

An on-grid system has no batteries. After sunset you draw from the grid as normal, offset by the credit you built up during the day. It also means the system shuts down during a grid blackout - this is a safety requirement, so that power is not fed into lines that linemen may be working on. If you need power to continue through an outage, that is a hybrid system rather than an on-grid one.

What we handle

As an authorised Luminous dealer serving Trivandrum and Kollam, we cover the free site survey and shadow analysis, the system design and sizing, the structural mounting, the DC and AC wiring with earthing and surge protection, commissioning, and the net meter interconnection and approval coordination with the utility. After handover, annual maintenance is covered by the same team.

One practical point worth knowing: Luminous hybrid inverters include a zero-export feature, which lets the system run before your net meter has actually been installed by the utility. You are not left waiting on paperwork to start generating.
